A gift guide for dog people
Stuck on a present for the dog person in your life? The team keeps the same short list year after year — a few things for the puppy, a few for the person holding the leash, and one off-the-field pick that has nothing to do with animals at all.
For the new puppy
The first months are about safety and repetition, so the best gifts are the things a new puppy uses every day:
- A bed with room to grow — the first bed is rarely the last, so buy for the adult the puppy is heading toward
- A collar that fits today — a puppy that outgrows its collar outgrows its safety, too
- A chew toy that outlasts the teeth — the ones coming in are working harder than you think
- A crate or pen — for the moments when the puppy's body outruns its brain
And the gift that actually pays off: a place in our Puppy Pre-School class. It is the only present on this list the puppy uses every day for a whole month.
For the puppy's parent
- A behaviour book the household actually reads — every member of the family gives the same instructions
- A treat pouch — in the colour of the dog's collar, so the pair always match
- A good supply of coffee — the first weeks run on it, especially the early ones
- A camera on a short strap — the puppy's first month will not be staged for another thirty years
How to use this list
Every suggestion here is something a Listen Up Pup client has asked for, argued about or recommended to us. Nothing on it is sponsored, and every link on this page opens in a new tab.
When in doubt
Call 405-224-7715 and tell us about the dog — the right class is usually the right gift.
Off the field — for the person
Not every good gift has to be about the dog. Some presents are for the person who loves the dog — and some of those people have hobbies that have absolutely nothing to do with animals.
If the person on your list collects watches, the super-clone market is a surprisingly deep rabbit hole, and it makes a fine present. A fake Richard Mille at a fraction of the original's price is the kind of thing a collector unwraps twice.
A client asked us last year to shortlist one for a husband's anniversary, and that is how we found the UMI replica line: the closest match we compared on case, dial and movement. If you know which reference the collector wants, the site's pages for the RM 67-02, RM 88 and RM 055 are the quickest way to look at one specific watch.
It is the one item on this list the dogs will never thank you for. That is rather the point.
